The Yucatan Polo Club started in 2006 and today has a sand court of 120 meters by 80 meters, which allows more speed similar to playing on grass and a professional grass court of 150 meters by 300 meters. The Yucatan Polo Club, located on the Merida-Progreso highway, is one of only two polo clubs in Mexico with grass and sand courts.

The noble and ancient sport of polo has come to the Yucatan under the name of Yucatan Polo Club, located near the town of Komchem. Polo is a team equestrian sport that is over 2,000 years old. Originally from Mongolia it was taken to India where in 1856 the first polo club in the world was founded. The English adopted the sport and took it to Europe, from where it was segregated to North and South America. During the last 75 years Argentina has become the new world headquarters of polo, where 6,000 of the 14,000 polo players reside. Polo is played on horseback, also called "polo ponies", not a specific breed, but a horse that fills the characteristics of polo: speed, duration, rapid acceleration and deceleration, calm temperament and recklessness. The "polo ponies" usually measure between 1.60 and 1.70 meters in the shoulder and are descendants of the Quarter Mile and Appendix. There are two types of polo fields, the sand field and the garden field. The regulations for sand are an oval that measures 100 mts by 50 mts. fenced with a 1.50 to 4 mts. The regulations for garden are of a field with measures of 300 mts by 150 mts. with a small wooden fence of 20 cm. The sand field is the one normally used to learn polo since the speed of the game is less than in the garden. The cost of playing on sand is better than in the garden and requires a smaller number of players. Sand play requires 3 players per team and 4 players per team for garden. The weaker player normally takes the offensive position, the more skilful player plays defense and places his teammates as offense while positioning himself on his passes. Each player has an advantage, from -2 for beginners to +10 (there are usually only 15 players in the world with a +10 advantage. For the sake of the game, the sum of the players' advantages turns into the team's advantage, so teams with the same or similar advantages play against each other.
